For our recent family vacation, we chose to stay at The Gates Hotel South Beach, a DoubleTree by Hilton, for five nights. Located just a short stroll from the iconic Miami Beach, the hotel offers a reasonably priced option in an area known for luxury accommodations. The room rates were fair, especially considering its prime location and clean, modern rooms that easily accommodated our family of four.
While the stay was overall pleasant and convenient, there were a few additional costs that caught us by surprise, which made the final bill higher than expected. Despite these, the hotel provided a relaxing and stylish environment, offering easy access to the beach, local attractions, and the vibrant South Beach scene. In the following sections, I’ll dive into more details about what we loved and where there’s room for improvement.
Room Experience: Comfortable, but Missing a Few Perks
Our room at The Gates Hotel South Beach was clean, modern, and tidy, providing everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The view from our room overlooked the swimming pool, which was pleasant, though nothing extraordinary as the hotel is not beachfront. If you’re expecting ocean views, you may want to adjust your expectations, but for a city-side location, the view was just fine. The room itself had all the essentials and was spacious enough for our family, contributing to an overall enjoyable experience.
However, one downside we encountered was the lack of a balcony, which was something we had really hoped for during our stay. Most rooms at the hotel do not come with a balcony, and when we asked about the possibility of upgrading at check-in, we were informed that no rooms with a balcony were available, despite the hotel not appearing overly busy. While this was a bit disappointing, we accepted it and moved on, though it’s something to keep in mind if outdoor space is important to you.

Convenient Location Near South Beach
The Gates Hotel is located in a prime spot, just a 10-minute walk from the beach, making it easy to enjoy Miami’s famous coastline. As a guest, you’re provided with towels and two beach chairs, which is a nice perk. However, keep in mind that you’ll have to bring your own umbrella if you need shade. While not beachfront, the short stroll to the sand is pleasant and gives you a chance to soak in the local atmosphere.
For those wanting to explore more of Miami, Ocean Drive is a 20 to 30-minute walk from the hotel. The vibrant nightlife, art deco architecture, and lively restaurants make it worth the walk, especially in the evenings when the area really comes alive. Additionally, the convenience of a grocery store just around the corner was a huge plus, allowing us to avoid the higher prices at the hotel for snacks and drinks.

Fitness Center: Convenient but Lacking Natural Light
The gym at The Gates Hotel South Beach was a solid option for staying active during my stay. It was clean, well-maintained, and had a variety of equipment suitable for a decent workout. I found it reasonably busy, especially during the early morning hours, but never to the point where it was overcrowded.
One downside, however, was the lack of windows. The absence of natural light made the space feel a bit enclosed, which might not be ideal for those who prefer a more open and airy environment while working out. Nonetheless, it served its purpose well for a quick morning workout.

Pool Experience at The Gates Hotel South Beach
The pool at The Gates Hotel South Beach is a pleasant amenity that caters well to the size of the hotel. While it’s not particularly large, it provides ample space for guests to relax and enjoy a swim. During peak times, the pool area can get a bit busy, but it generally avoids feeling overcrowded, making it a comfortable spot for unwinding.
Nearby, there’s a small children’s area which is ideal for families, as well as a jacuzzi tucked around the corner for a bit of extra relaxation. Overall, the pool area offers a good experience, though it’s worth noting that the bar prices are on the higher side, which can be a downside for guests looking to enjoy a drink while lounging by the pool.

Common Areas
The DoubleTree by Hilton South Beach Miami offers some inviting common areas that add to the overall guest experience. A highlight is the living room area near the lobby, which features a pool table and several comfy sofas. While we didn’t spend a lot of time indoors, this space proved to be a nice addition, especially for keeping the kids entertained while we waited for a taxi. It’s a thoughtful touch that adds to the hotel’s appeal, providing a cozy spot for relaxation and socializing.

Overall, our stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton South Beach Miami was quite pleasant. The hotel offered clean, comfortable rooms with a decent view of the swimming pool, and its location was convenient for accessing both the beach and local attractions. We appreciated the hotel’s proximity to the grocery store, which helped us manage expenses better and avoid some of the higher prices for items within the hotel.
However, the experience was slightly marred by the additional resort fees, which seemed quite steep at nearly $40 per night, and the pricing at the bar and restaurant, which felt overpriced. While the amenities and service were generally good, these extra costs left us feeling that they could have been better justified. Despite these concerns, the hotel provided a solid and enjoyable stay, making it a decent choice for those looking for a convenient base near South Beach.
