Royalton Antigua: Beautiful Beaches, Family-Friendly Vibes, and Inconsistent Service

A gorgeous, private all-inclusive let down by patchy service.

We spent nine nights at Royalton Antigua in late August, and going in, we had a bit of nagging worry about Caribbean weather that late in the season — hurricane season jitters and all that. As it turned out, we needn't have worried: we got sunshine on most days, with just the odd shower passing through, which was a genuinely pleasant surprise and set the tone for the whole trip.

Overall, it was a really good stay. The resort sits in a location that feels properly isolated and private, a world away from the busier, more built-up resort strips we've experienced elsewhere in the Caribbean. It's also only about 30 minutes by taxi from the airport, which meant both ends of the trip were refreshingly stress-free — no long transfer eating into holiday time.

A Private, Secluded Setting

One of the things that stood out almost immediately was just how private the resort feels. There's no sense of being packed in alongside dozens of other properties, and the setting has a real away-from-it-all quality that's hard to find at some of the bigger, more commercial Caribbean resorts.

Size played into this too. Royalton Antigua isn't a sprawling mega-resort, and while that might look like a downside on paper — fewer pools, fewer restaurants, less to explore — in practice it worked heavily in our favour as a family. With kids in tow, we felt comfortable letting them have a bit of independence, wandering ahead to the pool or down toward the beach, because we always knew they'd only be around the corner rather than lost somewhere across a sprawling property. That sense of scale made the whole holiday feel a little more relaxed for us as parents.

The Beach: A Clear-Water Highlight (With a Jellyfish Warning)

If we had to pick a single highlight of the stay, it would be the beach. It's on the smaller side compared to some resort beaches we've visited, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in water quality — properly clear, inviting, the kind of water you want to spend hours in rather than just admire from a lounger.

The one caveat is jellyfish. On several of the days we were there, we spotted them in the water, which meant we kept a closer eye than usual, especially with the kids swimming. It never stopped us getting in the sea, but it's worth knowing about if you're planning a trip around the same time of year — a bit of caution goes a long way.

Pools: Fine, Nothing Extraordinary

The main pool was perfectly serviceable — clean, reasonably sized, a nice spot to cool off between beach sessions — but it didn't leave much of an impression beyond that. It did exactly what a resort pool needs to do, without ever feeling like a destination in its own right.

There's a separate kids' pool as well, but it's quite minimal in terms of size and features, and honestly our kids barely used it. Between the beach and the organised activities, it just wasn't where they wanted to spend their time, so it felt a little like an afterthought in an otherwise well-thought-out resort.

Dining: Solid Buffet, Good Steakhouse, Limited Booking Options

Food-wise, the main buffet restaurant covered us well for most meals — reasonably good quality, decent variety, and no real complaints across the nine nights, which is no small thing when you're eating there repeatedly. It's not going to blow you away, but it's consistent, and consistency counts for a lot on a longer stay.

We also managed a couple of evenings at The Hunter, the resort's steakhouse, and enjoyed both — a nice change of pace from the buffet and a genuine highlight meal-wise. The frustrating part was everything else: The Hunter was the only specialty restaurant we could actually reserve through the resort app. When we asked about booking the others, we got vague, inconsistent answers — that they were closed, or didn't open every night — despite clearly seeing other guests heading down to them in the evenings. It left us wondering whether we were simply being turned away rather than told the full picture.

Gym: Nice, But Oddly Limited Hours

The gym itself was a pleasant surprise — decent equipment, well kept, and generally a nice space to train in. Mornings could get a bit crowded, which is fairly normal for a resort gym, but manageable.

What genuinely puzzled us was the opening hours: 6am to 10pm, rather than the 24-hour access we've come to expect as standard at most resorts. On a few mornings, this meant turning up before opening and having to wait for a member of staff to arrive and unlock the doors — a small thing, but an odd and slightly inconvenient policy for a resort of this standard.

Entertainment and the Kids' Club: A Real Highlight

The evening entertainment programme was fairly typical of what we've seen at other Caribbean resorts — competent, but not something that stood out as special. If you've stayed at a few all-inclusives before, you'll likely know roughly what to expect here.

Where the resort really shone, though, was with the daytime entertainment and vibe team working with the kids. Between football, volleyball, and a rotating cast of other activities, our kids were fully engaged most days, and the team clearly put real effort into building a rapport with them — within a few days, staff were greeting our kids by name, which is a small detail but one that made a genuine difference to how much they enjoyed the holiday. It's the kind of thing that sticks with kids long after a trip ends, and credit to the team for it.

Clean, With a Nice Diamond Club Upgrade — But Inconsistent Service

We were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade to a Diamond Club floor room, which felt like a nice touch and gave the stay an extra bit of polish. The room itself was clean and comfortable throughout our stay, with no issues on that front.

Where things fell down was the day-to-day servicing. We had to proactively ask for the minibar to be refilled rather than it happening automatically, and on more than one occasion we had to chase for towels before they turned up. None of it was a dealbreaker individually, but together it created a sense that service in the room wasn't something we could take for granted — we had to stay on top of it ourselves.

A Few Other Inconsistencies

Staff helpfulness varied noticeably depending on who we happened to speak to, and nowhere was that clearer than with our late checkout request. The night before we left, we asked at the desk and were told there was no issue at all — we'd just need to pop down in the morning to confirm and settle it. When we did exactly that the next day, we were told the opposite: as a Diamond Club room, it needed to be ready on time with no exceptions, even though we were happy to pay any applicable fee. Two different answers to the same question, from the same hotel, less than twelve hours apart — which was more than a little frustrating on checkout morning.

We noticed a similar pattern at the pool bar, where service could swing from attentive and quick one day to slow and seemingly disinterested the next, with no obvious explanation for the difference.

None of this tipped the stay into a bad one — quite the opposite. Taken as a whole, we had a genuinely good time: plenty of sunshine, a beautiful and secluded beach, a private, family-friendly setting that let our kids roam a little, and an entertainment team our kids are still talking about weeks later.

But the inconsistencies were hard to ignore — from having to chase basic room servicing, to conflicting answers on checkout, to the restaurant booking restrictions that were never properly explained. None of it ruined the trip, but together it kept the stay from being the truly exceptional one it clearly had the ingredients to be.

If Royalton Antigua can iron out that consistency across the board, it would be very hard to fault. As it stands, it's a really good holiday with a few rough edges worth going in prepared for.
